A few years after we planted our hazelnuts, I was eagerly awaiting the time when they would have pollen-y bits. Except I couldn’t find anything online about what I was looking for. We did, finally, see the developed bits over the winter … but, this year, I can actually see them starting to develop in late July.
We got a whole truckload of mulch from a local arborist — a lot of pine, so it smells really good.
And today we added the electric fence around the garlic — it’s almost time to harvest the garlic and get our broccoli and cabbages into the bed
We put an electric fence up around our corn on the farm — wanted to document what we’ve got
A note so we can (hopefully) avoid over-seeding corn in the future — we want to have a foot between the plants in each row and 30″ between rows. Scott’s seen between 20″ and 30″ row spacing — so we can go denser than this if we want to increase the number of plants.

The proto-hazelnuts are starting to look more like hazelnuts!
Anya noticed that there is a little disc forming if you look from the bottom.
We have observable little proto-hazelnuts forming!
I harvested two large shopping bags stuffed with garlic scapes today. I’ll blanch and freeze a bunch; but, this year, I am going to try pickling some garlic scapes too.
Today was the first day our two older kittens got to play outside. They were cautious at first; but, by the evening, they were running across the back patio chasing each other and playing in the grass. When Anya went to bed, they ran up to the patio outside of her room, and they came right inside when she opened the door.
